Weight loss herbs would seem to form the perfect solution for people who want to lose weight but want to do it using natural supplements.

Guggul - this herb is very effective in controlling obesity and cholesterol. It's a relatively mild and gentle herb without much in the way of side effects. It helps you to lose weight by increasing the body's metabolic rate.

St. John's Wort - not primarily a weight loss herb even though you'll often see it advertised as such. It's primarily used as an antidepressant. A person going through depression is likely to overeat. By targeting depression, its thought that the person will be less prone to over eating and hence will lose weight. There has been no direct correlation, however, between St. John's Wort and weight loss.

Weight Loss Herbs to Avoid

Ephedra - While effective, this herb also raises the blood pressure and increases the heart rate. Avoid it if you can. You'll also see this herb referred to as ma huang. This drug has been banned by the FDA and is one of the Chinese weight loss herbs best left alone.

Bitter orange - This was the replacement drug that was meant to take the place of Ephedra, once Ephedra was banned from the market place. Unfortunately, this herb has two of the main problems as Ephedra. It raises the heart beat and raises the blood pressure.

If you look at all of the different nutrient based weight control methods, natural weight loss herbs remain some of the most popular ones out there. Always important to remember, however, is that just because a herb is touted as being natural , it doesn't meant that its safe to use without supervision.
